Sophie Spedding (They/Them) b.1995, London.
Sophie’s practice is focused on producing large-scale paintings telling stories of romance and sexual violence. They see the value of consent within image-making as a push and pull using pov which has become a language of performance. They value making whilst balancing low-fi references and harbouring the sentiment of role play. Their work references disability, sex addiction, ecosexuality and queerness. Embracing clowning and humour at its core. Clowning used post-ironically as a placeholder to ridicule predatorial men. Their practice is based in London where they also, earned a BA from Slade School of Fine Art in 2019. They are a Tom Of Finland emerging artist winner. Showing in group shows internationally with; Mana Contemporary, (NJ, USA), Galeria Anna Marra, (Belgium), Eduardo Secci Contemporary,( Florence IT), Changing Room Gallery,(London, UK) but most recently shown at Quench, (Margate, UK). They have also
participated in the Palazzo Monti Residency, IT, in 2019.
